Abstract: Structural contingency theory, which suggests that
        an effective organization or work group must fit its
        technology to the structure of its tasks, can be
        used to guide research on computer use in
        cooperative work. The theory is explained and used
        as a framework for analyzing the influence of
        information technology on work group
        effectiveness.
