Abstract: Authors examined mediated remote communication
        using a shared electronic whiteboard with and
        without the addition of a speech channel. First,
        permanent media such as the whitebaord enables users
        to construct shared data structures around which to
        organise their activity. Second, this permanence
        allows users to abandon some (but not all) of the
        turn-taking commonly used in spoken converstation
        and to organize their activities in a highly
        parallel manner. With addition of the speech
        channel, people still used the whiteboard for the
        content of the communication, while using speech for
        coordinating the process of communication.
