The core of hypermedia's power lies in the complex
networks of links that can be created within and
between documents. The Web View (WV), a tool for
reviewing and navigating such networks with a minimum
of user confusion, was developed within Intermedia. WV
combines a record of the user's path through the
network with a map of currently available links. A set
of commands permits the user to open documents
directly from the WV. IRIS Intermedia includes a word
processor, a structural graphics editor, a bitmap
viewer, and a timeline editor; it provides better
orientation cues and reduces cognitive overhead.
